"VIKING 08 - A multinational and multifunctional Exercise in the Spirit of Partnership for Peace."

In November 2008, the Swedish Armed Forces and partner nations conducted a distributed multinational and multifunctional Command Post Exercise/CAX in the Viking series. During the exercise, Concept Development and Experimentation (CD&E) was conducted to provide an enhanced common air picture.

Pitch provided key technical support and components to integrate CD&E simulations using its HLA IEEE 1516 based products and services.

In the Viking 08 exercise, a federation of simulations based on Pitch pRTI 1516 was used to support the CAX. The Viking 08 federation also stimulated the CD&E federation using bridge software provided by Pitch. The bridge solution was provided as a service and consisted of software and hardware to provide connectivity and filtering capabilities.

The bridge also emulated a information-diode to ensure a one-way transfer of information from the Viking exercise to the CD&E.  Approximately 4000+ entities and interactions were continuously transferred from the Viking exercise to stimulate the CD&E networked systems.

Besides the Pitch pRTI™ and Bridge from Pitch, the Pitch GE Adapter™ was also used to supply two Google Earth connections. One connection was used for internal viewers inside the CD&E network and allowed demonstration of scenario entities in real-time for operators. The other connection was provided to the NATO Joint Warfare Center (JWC) in Stavanger Norway that concurrently conducted the exercise "Steadfast Joiner".

The CD&E was very well attended with visits from both NATO and the EU and the level of interest in the experiment and the use of Pitch products and solutions have been high. The results of the Viking 08 CD&E will be input for future Viking and other CAX based exercises.
